Urge Port Perry to End Cruel Rodeo Events

Is causing an animal fear, distress, and physical injury risk necessary for a community's entertainment?

Towns around Ontario continue to hold rodeo events that needlessly use and cause distress to cows, calves and other animals for our amusement.

We are asking organizers and town councils to become community leaders by choosing attractions that celebrate heritage without including practices that use and cause distress to animals.

Dear Port Perry Fair organizers,

I am writing to urge the Port Perry Fair organizers to reject the inclusion of rodeo in future events.

Fairs celebrate local culture, bring community together, and create positive memories. They should reflect the values we want to pass on to future generations. Allowing events that torment animals sends a very different message.

It is unnecessary for calves to be deliberately frightened, chased, caught with a rope around the neck, choked, thrown to the ground, and tied for our entertainment.

It is needless to torment bulls with irritating straps placed around their bodies to cause them to buck for our amusement.

Public attitudes toward animals have changed significantly. We increasingly recognize that they are sentient beings like ourselves who are capable of feeling fear, stress, and pain. Our treatment of them should evolve with our understanding.

Keeping an unethical event alive simply because it’s been tradition is not a just cause to continue.

Many communities have already chosen to discontinue rodeo events because they no longer align with modern standards of how we treat our fellow animals. Port Perry has an opportunity to lead the way by choosing attractions that celebrate heritage without including practices that use and cause distress to animals.

I sincerely hope that the Port Perry Fair organizers will take a stance against unethical treatment of animals by removing calf roping, rodeo and all events that use animals for entertainment from future fairs. This would reflect the kind of community we are—one that values respect, kindness, and protection of all living beings.
